Assisted Living Highest Level of Licensure

It is most important to know that the New York State Department of Health has awarded The 80th Street Residence with the highest level of licensure.  We are an Assisted Living Residence with Certifications for both Special Needs and Enhanced Assisted Living. Simply put, these certifications allow us to provide ongoing support as our Residents’ cognitive and physical abilities continue to change, lessening the chance that they may have to move.  Of course, such licensure also demonstrates our community’s quality and commitment to excellence. As a bonus, it meets the criteria for reimbursement for many long-term care insurance policies.

New York State's Long Term Care Care Licensing

The Department of Health for the State of New York recently published a letter outlining the differences between unlicensed and licensed options for long term care.

Unlicensed

Independent Living, also known as Independent Senior Housing, is not licensed or regulated by the Department.

Licensed

Adult Care Facilities and Assisted Living Residences directly provide assistance with dressing, bathing, eating, continence management and medication assistance for those who do not require the intensive care provided in nursing homes. These facilities also provide supervision and case management. There are three licensure and certification categories of Assisted Living Residences.

Assisted Living Residences (ALRs) provide or arrange for housing, on-site monitoring and personal care services and/or home care services in a home-like setting to five or more adult residents unrelated to the assisted living operator. An ALR must provide daily food service, 24 hour on-site monitoring, case management services, and an individualized service plan.

Enhanced Assisted Living Residences (EALRs) are licensed ALRs with certificates issued by the New York State Department of Health authorizing them to provide skilled nursing services and to accommodate residents who exceed the retention standards of basic ALRs. This model is often associated with "aging in place."

Special Needs Assisted Living Residences (SNALRs) are licensed ALRs with a certificate issued by the New York State Department of Health authorizing the ALR to provide services to resident with special needs, most commonly Alzheimer's disease, dementia, or cognitive impairment. SNALRs must provide a special needs plan which addresses how the resident's needs will be safely met. In addition, the assisted living operator may choose to be dually certified to provide EALR and SNALR services thereby further allowing residents to age in place.

The 80th Street Residence is proud to hold all three of the licenses awarded by the State of New York for an Assisted Living Residence.

80th Street Residence

We’ve made it this far…here’s the reason

Back in 1999, something extraordinary happened in New York City. The doors opened to the first and only Assisted Living Community entirely devoted to Memory Care…The 80th Street Residence. Not many communities have such longevity. Over the decades, we’ve seen new buildings go up and the number of home care agencies multiply. The comparison game is real. So how is it that we have made it this far?

We do not like change…we love it! What began here as “Memory Care” has evolved into something so much better. Our decision to change was intentional. We worked hard. We studied. We learned that there are well over 100 different types of dementia. Today, we confidently welcome Residents with Lewy Body’s, Parkinson’s, Vascular Dementia and Alzheimer’s just to name a few.

What else keeps us growing and going?

A good place to start is with our two Owners, Wayne Kaplan and Larry Morehead…no board, no corporation, no shareholders…we are a standalone community encouraged from the top to be different from everyone else and to use our imagination and creativity to stand out from the rest.

We look forward to sharing more of our story with you as we believe we are the best possible alternative for someone no longer able to live at home. We are ready to help when you are ready to call…

Medrina - Remote Patient Monitoring

The 80th Street Residence prides itself on partnering with organizations and companies who can help us expand available services to our Residents. Our partnership with Medrina offers our Residents the opportunity to access an additional level of clinical support through their Remote Patient Monitoring (RPM). Medrina provides contactless devices that may easily be installed close to their beds allowing the technology to monitor vital signs such as heart and respiratory rates. This data is then analyzed by nurses and/or physicians and allows 80th Street to receive a clinical snapshot that encourages proactive interventions vs. reactive interventions.

Take a peek at what RPM by Medrina looks like here at 80th Street.

We encourage you to see which communities are licensed to provide dementia care with the NYS Department of Health by having SNALR Certification.
