Creating Fun Moments in Dementia Care

Our mission is creating fun moments in dementia care. As Play Consultants for 30 years in the Toy Industry, we found our knowledge of play made caregiving for our loved ones living with Dementia more effective and fun.

Working with 80th Street Residence, we discovered that play could help improve the quality of life for all stages of cognitive change.

Connecting in a new way, play adds to the level of trust, respect and confidence. Residents can build relationships, make choices, and use skills they’ve enjoyed in the past or explore new ones. Play becomes a great method for interaction and communication.

Working directly with Residents, we also developed a Personal Play Plan, to expand and continue their engagement over time. We hope that our Play Plan will be lifting spirits and elevating level of care for all who would like to play.

Medrina - Remote Patient Monitoring

The 80th Street Residence prides itself on partnering with organizations and companies who can help us expand available services to our Residents. Our partnership with Medrina offers our Residents the opportunity to access an additional level of clinical support through their Remote Patient Monitoring (RPM). Medrina provides contactless devices that may easily be installed close to their beds allowing the technology to monitor vital signs such as heart and respiratory rates. This data is then analyzed by nurses and/or physicians and allows 80th Street to receive a clinical snapshot that encourages proactive interventions vs. reactive interventions.

Take a peek at what RPM by Medrina looks like here at 80th Street.

80th Street Residence

Collaboration is Key

The 80th Street Residence has long believed that partnering with others is one of the best ways to achieve continued growth. When the opportunity arose in 2016 to partner with Inspired Memory Care, Inc. (IMC) founded by Nettie Harper, MS, CTRS and Kelly Gilligan, CVW we instinctively knew that it was an opportunity not to be missed.

IMC provides monthly trainings at The 80th Street Residence that include a 6-hour dementia course and a virtual reality training using the Embodied Labs immersive training platform. These trainings are required for all staff at 80th Street to ensure that every employee - from our caregivers to the Front Desk to Housekeeping - know how to engage appropriately with our Residents.

Medical Care that is Collaborative, Restorative and Palliative

Andrew Lyons, MD has been an integral part of the 80th Street Family for many years now. Trained in Primary Care Internal Medicine, his compassion and practicality make him a perfect fit for our Residents. With most of his two decades of experience having been in service to seniors with cognitive impairment and multiple complex medical conditions, Dr. Lyons seeks to provide the right interventions for his patients without pursuing aggressive and unnecessary diagnostics. His approach to medical care is collaborative, restorative and palliative. Dr. Lyon’s private practice has always been a “house calls only” model, and, in 2007, he was awarded the House Call Physician of the Year by the American Academy of Home Care Medicine. You may find Dr. Lyons at 80th Street every Tuesday.
